Bookplate of Arthur Melville Clarke of Herriotshall and Oxton.

I found this little booklet in the British Heart Foundation charity shop in Harrogate on Thursday. It was a lovely surprise to see the bookplate when I opened it.

The knights of Dee is but one of a number of poems and verse in the booklet. The river Dee is a tidal river and regularly has what is known as a tidal bore, where the tide of the sea sweeps up the river reversing its flow. The knights of the river Dee are the appearance of the "white horses" (the foam and spray) on the waves. The "knights" are gallantly charging up the river only to eventually subside.

An interesting man. Arthur Melville Clarke
